David Caldwell, the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, came to UNC in 1983 and is tenured in the program area of German. Before coming to UNC, he earned the B.A. in German at the University of Texas at Austin and his M.A. and Ph.D. in German at The Ohio State University. Dr. Caldwell served two terms as a department chair in Foreign Languages and helped found the interdisciplinary Minor in Film Studies. Other past leadership positions at UNC include serving as Interim Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences and as Chairperson of the General Education Council. He has also been active in the UNC Honors Program, teaching Honors Connections Seminars, serving as Honors coordinator for Foreign Languages, and advising the UNC International Film Series. In service to professional organizations, Dr. Caldwell has been elected to the national delegate assembly of the Modern Language Association and serves on the editorial board of the Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature, published by the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association.

During the ongoing transition to a new university structure implemented under the Charting the Future plan, Dr. Caldwell currently serves on the President’s Planning Council and the Transition Team, and is an ex-officio member of the Commission on the University Experience and the General Education Council.

Dr. Caldwell’s professional presentations and publications reflect his research interests in German language, literature, and civilization; film studies; contemporary European affairs; foreign language pedagogy; popular culture; and translation theory and practice. He has been the recipient of grants from the Fulbright Association, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the German Academic Exchange Service and has participated in grant-sponsored post-doctoral research and professional development at Cornell University and Clark University and overseas in Bonn and Berlin. His background in teaching, scholarship and service emphasizes professional depth, appreciation for sound pedagogy, and the creation of interdisciplinary opportunities for research and program delivery.
