Candelaria Hall, one of UNC’s main classroom buildings, was named for Martin Candelaria, a professor of Spanish at UNC from 1948 to 1963. Candelaria also developed UNC’s Language Arts center.
The offices of the Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Modern Languages and Cultural Studies, the School of Communication, and the School of Social Sciences are all housed in Candelaria Hall as are the offices of the following programs: Modern Languages, Hispanic Studies, Africana Studies, Women's Studies, Communications Studies, Journalism and Mass Communications, Economics, Geography, and Sociology.
Colorado artist and teacher Leo Tanguma and his students created a mural of an account of Martin Candelaria’s life and Hispanic culture which was installed in Candelaria Hall in the north stairwell in May 2000.
